Investment strategies

Five ways we think about investing.

Educational overviews of the approaches and ideas that shape how we build portfolios. These are general descriptions, not personal recommendations.

01

Stocks

Buying shares means owning a slice of a business. Over long periods, equity returns have been driven by company earnings growth and dividends — with significant volatility along the way.

How we think about it

  • Focus on business quality and durable earnings
  • Compare price with estimated intrinsic value
  • Size positions with risk in mind

Consider

  • Prices can fall sharply and stay low
  • Single-company risk can be large
  • Dividends are never guaranteed

02

ETFs

Exchange-traded funds hold a basket of securities and trade like a share. They can provide broad, transparent and cost-efficient exposure to markets, sectors, regions or themes.

How we think about it

  • Compare fees and tracking difference
  • Check what the fund actually holds
  • Use as building blocks for core exposure

Consider

  • Funds can still lose value
  • Some themes are narrow or crowded
  • Liquidity varies by product
03

Long-term investing

Compounding rewards time. Reinvested returns can build on themselves, while frequent trading can add costs and emotional decisions.

How we think about it

  • Start with goals and time horizon
  • Contribute regularly where possible
  • Rebalance rather than react

Consider

  • Long horizons still include drawdowns
  • Inflation and fees erode returns
  • Past returns don't predict future ones

    04

    Portfolio diversification

Different assets respond differently to economic conditions. Combining them can reduce reliance on any single outcome and make the journey more manageable.

    How we think about it

    • Mix asset classes, sectors and regions
    • Watch correlations, not just labels
    • Rebalance toward target weights

    Consider

    • Diversification doesn't prevent losses
    • Correlations can rise in a crisis
    • Over-diversifying can dilute returns
    05

    Market analysis

A repeatable process helps separate signal from noise. Our framework moves from the big picture down to individual positions.

      Macro context

Growth, inflation, interest rates and policy backdrop.

    2. 2

      Fundamentals

Revenue, margins, balance sheets and competitive position.

    3. 3

      Valuation

What is priced in versus a reasoned estimate of value.

    4. 4

      Risk review

Concentration, liquidity, scenarios and what could go wrong.
